SWSO Continues Support of Orthodontic Faculty

Dr. Mark Felton

In its continuing effort to support orthodontic faculty, the SWSO has once again given awards to various full time faculty members of the university graduate programs within the region. This year a total of $24,000 was distributed. The awards were given out at the 2004 SWSO Annual Session in Oklahoma City this past October. Each of the four programs were allotted $5,000 for faculty support and development. These awards were used for various needs such as reimbursement for travel to orthodontic meetings and for research related endeavors. In all, 15 faculty members from the programs benefited from this program.

Additionally, this year a $4,000 competitive research award was given. Dr. Peter Gakunga of The University of Texas at San Antonio was the recipient. His research is focusing on "The Control of Growth in the Cranial Base Synchondroses."

This program is now continuing into its third year as plans are already underway for 2005. The SWSO can be proud that they are leading the way in constituency support of graduate education via this program.
