Recipient: Dr. Ram S. Nanda
The Martin Dewey Memorial Award is the highest honor that the Southwestern Society of Orthodontists can bestow on one of its members. This annual award was established in 1953 to recognize an individual for outstanding contributions to the advancement of orthodontics in education, practice, and research. It is a pleasure to announce that the 2004 Martin Dewey Memorial Award recipient is Dr. Ram S. Nanda.
Ram S. Nanda, D.D.S., M.S., Ph. D., is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics, University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is also Chairman of the Division of Developmental Dentistry and has held these positions since 1972. Dr. Nanda is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and a Professor in the Graduate College at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He was honored by being named an Endowed Professor, Department of Orthodontics, University of Oklahoma in 1995. He is the founding Chair of the Department of Orthodontics as well as the Division of Developmental Dentistry, and maintains a private orthodontic practice. Dr. Nanda became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1990.
Dr. Nanda is married to Pramod and is the father of three children. One child is an orthodontist and the other two are retinal surgeons. He received his dental degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry and his degree in orthodontics from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Nanda's Ph. D. with a major in human growth was obtained at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
With a teaching career that spans over five decades, Dr. Nanda has organized excellent clinical and research programs in predoctoral and graduate orthodontics. He has presented numerous lectures and courses on his philosophy, treatment technique, and research both nationally and internationally. He has contributed to the scientific program of the American Association of Orthodontists on many occasions. His contributions to research are widely acknowledged with over one hundred fifty original papers and several book chapters. He has been an editorial consultant for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics as well as the Angle Orthodontist. He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Phi Kappa Phi, and a Fellow in the International College of Dentists. In 1988, he received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the University of Oklahoma and in 1991, he was the first recipient of the Edward H. Angle Research Prize given by the Angle Society of Orthodontists. Recently, Dr. Nanda received the 2004 Outstanding Professorial Achievement Award from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.
The Martin Dewey Memorial Award will be presented to Dr. Nanda during the first business meeting of the Southwestern Society of Orthodontists Annual Session in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Saturday, October 23, 2004. Congratulations, Dr. Nanda, on an exemplary life and a job well done!
