ADEA recently announced the selection of the ADEA Leadership Institute Class of 2005. Now in its fifth year, the ADEA Leadership Institute is a unique program in health professions education, designed to develop the nation's most promising dental faculty to become future leaders in dental and higher education. Participants include faculty and administrators from dental, allied dental, and advanced dental education. Through the four phases, fellows engage in a variety of assessments to guide their professional development. The institute includes sessions in such areas as leadership theory, team building, communications, public policy, managing change, educational policy, legal issues, research, and budgeting and financial management.

With the 21 fellows of the Class of 2005, a total of 90 individuals from 42 dental schools, three community colleges, the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, and one hospital-based program will participate in the year-long program.

The 2005 class began the Leadership Institute experience at the 2004 ADEA Annual Session in Seattle, Washington. Next, fellows will engage in a self-study curriculum on organizational theory and leadership in higher education in preparation for Phase I, which will take place from June 23 to 27 in Stowe, Vermont. This initial stage is designed to help fellows develop personal and interpersonal competencies for leadership. The fellows will benefit from feedback assessments performed by their peers, deans, and others from their home institutions, allowing the fellows to learn how others view their leadership skills.

Phase II will take place in Washington, DC from September 19 to 21. This phase focuses on legislative issues affecting dental education and includes visits to representatives on Capitol Hill. Phase III, held from January 21 to 23, 2005 will address administrative competencies required of effective leaders. The fellows will conclude the year with Phase IV, which will take place in Baltimore, Maryland at the 2005 ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition in March, during which the fellows are responsible for a full-day Faculty Development Workshop.

During the year of the institute experience, fellows will pursue a project addressing a key issue in dental education. As a part of this project, fellows will interview a variety of leaders at their academic dental institution and parent institution and in their state. Throughout the year, the fellows will work in peer groups with other fellows who share similar interests and aspirations and with the ADEA Leadership Institute advisors. The Class of 2005 advisors are Dr. Denise Kassebaum, Executive Associate Dean, University of Colorado, School of Dentistry and Class of 2000, ADEA Leadership Institute; Dr. Richard Ranney, ADEA William J. Gies Fellow, Professor of Periodontics and former Dean, University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery Dental School; and Dr. John Williams, Dean, University of Louisville, School of Dentistry.
